Tracking Ché Guevara’s history since the occupation
of La Cabaña Fortress until the farewell letter to Fidel
Castro
1959
January 2, 1959:
Ché occupies La Cabaña Fortress.
February 9, 1959:
In accordance with a law of the Revolutionary Government, Ernesto
Guevara is declared Cuban citizen. In that occasion, he said he
was moved by this distinction especially because it had been given
before only to the Generalisimo Máximo Gómez
June 2, 1959:
Ché and Aleida March de la Torre (her partner since the Sierra
del Escambray) get married. They will have four children: Aleida,
Camilo, Celia y Ernesto.
June 12 – September 5. 1959:
Accomplishing a mission of the Cuban government, Ché travels
to Egypt, Sudan, Pakistan, India, Burma, Indonesia, Ceylon, Japan,
Morocco and Yugoslavia.
October 7, 1959:
Chief of the Department of Industry of the National Institute of
the Agrarian Reform. (INRA)
November 26, 1959:
He is designated the President of the National Bank of Cuba.
1960
The book “La guerra de guerrillas” (The guerilla warfare)
is published in Habana.
October 22- December 9, 1960:
Accomplishing an economic mission, Ernesto Guevara visits the Soviet
Union, Czechoslovakia, the German Democratic Republic, the Popular
Republic of China and the Popular and Democratic Republic of Corea.
1961
February 23, 1961:
Ché is designated Minister of Industry and member of the
Central Council of Planification.
April 17, 1961:
Ché commands the revolutionary forces in Pinar del Río
during the Invasión of the United States and Cuban counterrevolutionary
forces in Playa Girón (bay of Pigs). This is the firts military
victory of a Latin- American country over the United States.
August 4-17, 1961:
Commander Ernesto Guevara represents Cuba at the Conference of the
Inter-American Economic and Social Council (CIES) that was held
in Punta del Este, Uruguay, where he denounces the imperialist nature
of the Alliance for Progress.
August 18-19, 1961:
Ché travels to Buenos Aires and Brasilia in order to meet
Presidents Arturo Frondizi, from Argentina, and Janio Quadros from
Brazil. He returns to Havana.
1962
August 21- September 5, 1962:
As the head of the Cuban delegation, Ernesto Guevara visits Moscow
and travels to Czechoslovakia.
October 1962:
During the October Crisis (Missile Crisis) Guevara occupies his
combat post in Pinar del Río.
1963
May 1963:
Commander Guevara is elected member of the Central Committee, of
the Political Bureau, and of the Secretariat of the Unite Party
of the Socialist Revolution of Cuba (former ORI).
July 1963:
Ché participates in the commemoration of the first anniversary
of the independence of Algeria representing the Cuban government.
1964
March 20 - April 13:
Ernesto Guevara heads the Cuban delegation to the conferencia of
the Organization of Comerse and Development of the United Nations
(ONU) in Geneva, Switzerland. In april, he visits France, Algeria,
and Czechoslovakia. He travels to the Soviet Union to participate
in the festivities for the 47th anniversary of the Socialist Revolution
of October representing the Cuban government.
December 1964
Guevara heads the Cuban delegation to the UN General Assembly in
New York and then he visits Algeria and Mali.
1965
January - March 1965:
Ché travels to Congo (Brazzaville), Guinea, Ghana, Dahomey
(Benin since 1975) and Algeria again. In the Popular Republic of
China, he meets Mao Tse-tung and Chou En-lai. Then he visits Tanzania,
la Arab United Republic, Egypt and Algeria, where he participates
in the Economic Seminar of the Afroasian Solidarity. He returns
to Havana.
March 15 1965:
He makes his last public appearance in Cuba before his collaborators
of the Ministry of Industry. The enemy propaganda made many efforts
to circulate different rumors about the reasons of his enigmatic
disappearance. His farewell letter to Fidel was later made public
in Havana.
